3. Interview #2

Image
Interview/User testing: This interview was done using different tampon packages and instructions to see what they like/dislike about each one.  Questions: Questions 11-12 ask to compare all. Questions 13and14 do not ask. Answers: Subject: 13-year-old girl - never used tampons before. Tampon No, it's scary When I get my period Put it into your huha maybe 1 day? N/a I don't know, can not find it yeah. Its a lot to read, want more pictures. I don't really know where and how exactly to get it in there.  yes they are clear but they make it sound scary to use.  I think so, how do I take it out? Really boring, I would rather see more pictures or a video. so small I like the bright colored one (pink tampon) and the tin is cute doesn't look like you are carrying tampons, so not embarrassing. could have better pictures I want to use tampons so I can go swimming and play sports but am scared it will hurt. I'm also scared I will do it wrong and i

4. Card Sorting

Image
I decided to use all 3 instructions and packages when doing my card sorting exercise. My card categories were: Instructions, cautions/warnings, advertising, contact/links, brand info, and general product info.

5. Card sorting #2

Image
Using highlighters I decided what information I wanted to keep (yellow), maybe keep (orange) and not keep (red). I did this while keeping in mind what i had learned from my 2 interviews. I sorted the information into a logical order Typed up text:

6. Online Research

Image
I discovered many 'story time' videos of mostly young girls but also some adults talking about their first-time experience using tampons. This has given me some insight on their thoughts, feer and confusions on using the product.

7. What to incorporate in the redesign

What to incorporate in the redesign: Using my 2 interviews and other research here is a list of things I want to incorporate in my redesign.  Use clear simple language. (not specific to age group or slang) Somehow make them keep the instructions or somehow always make information easily available. Make clear distinctions between the different categories (instruction, warnings about TSS...) keep small easily portable and concealable packaging. What is the tampon made of? Reinsure user its save! keep packaging environmentally friendly. (even better reusable) Make clear how to remove the tampon More pictures of how to insert it. A way of tracking how long/ if you have a tampon in.  Folding pamphlet is confusing. Where does it start? Warnings clearer. A better explanation of where the vagina opening is etc.  Positivity and encouragement, this is a normal thing, not scary. Stress that it should not hurt and needs to be in all the way. More positions of how to stand to put

8. What else is out there?

Online research of tampon design and other packaging and instruction design.

9. First mockup and usertesting

Image
Initial fold out boxes design After my initial research, I decided I would make a fold-out box that includes the instructions so that there is no leaflet to throw away. I designed one box for 8 and one for 16 tampons. The 16 piece box was easier as there is more room to put info on. User testing: The questions asked were: As a first-time user can, you follow the instructions? Can you tell me what TSS is and what the symptoms are? Feedback: How do I know what kind of tampon to buy (small, reg or medium) what is my flow? Warning on the outside is a bit scary, "i'll just use pads" General tampon info not needed. TSS info good but could be condensed and use icons. "First timers" good wording. Could be the first thing you see when opening. I have no mirror, maybe include a mirror? "relax your vagina" weird wording "not hurt" yes but it could feel uncomfortable. include that the tampon cant get lost so don't worry inclu

10. Colour and style added - maroon colour

Image
User-testing Feedback: Marron color maybe not so good for tweens and is to 'bloody' Try earthy light colors, modern and cheerful Illustrations are good but colour bad/scary Use more icons More hierarchy How many tampons are in there? Include encouraging language To much text, not clear and info hard to find Warning on the bottom not needed as its inside/ scary Info about tompon company not needed.
